An ‘already substantially sized’ farm in Thorington is planning to extend further.
Park Farm handles 337,249 broilers and wants to build three more poultry houses and increase the number of birds to 486,000 broilers.
Locals say they haven’t been properly consulted, and are concerned about the noise and smell. Suffolk Coastal District Council has agreed to extend the deadline for public comments.
Broiler chickens are slaughtered at eight weeks old, and up to 19 birds can be legally kept in a single square metre, so the floor space of a bird is about the size of an A4 piece of paper. Read more at the Compassion in World Farming website.
Intensive production of poultry food, particularly cereals and soybean, has caused deforestation and pollution. Production, slaughter and transport also increases greenhouse emissions.
Please take a moment to object to the plans, which would increase the size of an already ‘mega-farm.’
