Statement on Military Zone at the Suffolk Show

Suffolk Coastal Green Party is concerned at the Suffolk Show’s decision to include a military display at the county’s annual agricultural event (‘Suffolk Show 2019: Military Zone shows off Army’s best hardware’ East Anglian Daily Times 29.05.19).

The show’s strength is that it is, as the East Anglian Daily Times noted in its report, ‘much more than an agricultural competition.’ It is a much-loved family event. As such, we don’t feel it is an appropriate place for army recruitment, a stated aim of the Royal Anglian Regiment.

Our individual views on the role of the UK military are diverse. But we do agree that weapons which are designed to harm or take life are not toys, nor something to be taken lightly. The iconic and popular Suffolk Show is the wrong arena for this kind of military display.

We hope that the organisers will reconsider their presence next year.
